3DTraffic Kick-off Symposium was Held at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok

3DTraffic Kick-off Symposium was held in the afternoon of May 20th, 2025. The event took place in the Meeting Room on the 2nd floor of Engineering Building 4, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. The main purpose of organizing this symposium was to provide a detailed understanding of the project’s research plan, and the event itself was open to representatives from the local agencies who attended the JCC meeting in the morning, as well as representatives from other organizations in the public, private, and academic sectors. The event was also held in a hybrid style, with around 90 participants attended the event both on-site and online. Thai-English translation service was also provided simultaneously during the event.

The event started with opening remarks from Prof. Kasem Choocharukul, the Co-Principal Investigator of the 3DTraffic project. He expressed his confidence that the project, which pools experts and researchers from various relevant sectors to make joint efforts, will be able to foster the “three good things” following the project’s nickname “Sam Dee Traffic” which translates to the three good things about road traffic: faster, greener, and safer traffic. Furthermore, Prof. Daisuke Fukuda, the Principal Investigator, gave an overview to introduce the project, enabling attendees to understand its background and objectives.

We are honored to welcome Mr. Haruka Ozawa, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, deliver a remark on the continuous cooperation between Japan and Thailand in developing transportation infrastructure that is vital for both urban and national development. We are also honored to have Distinguished Professor Yoshitsugu Hayashi from Tokaigakuen University deliver a keynote lecture related to his previous SATREPS project in Bangkok and his expectations for the 3DTraffic project. As the project leader of the previous SATREPS project, which also took Bangkok as a case study, we gained a lot of insights from Prof. Hayashi’s explanation about how the Quality of Life and CO2 emissions can be improved through the transformation of city structure and optimizing QoL-MaaS scenario, advices that came from his project.

An introductory session of 3DTraffic research was held to present the ideas to the participants. The 3DTraffic project has 4 working groups, with each group focusing on one research topic related to traffic management, ranging from traffic-data analysis and modeling techniques to traffic management methods and traffic signal control. One of the main goals of this project is to develop a Digital Twin prototype model, which will serve as important information for developing effective traffic management models and methods in real-world areas. The research topic and the representatives of each Working Group are as follows:

  • Working Group 1: Advanced Traffic Condition Estimation Methodology Using Data Fusion Techniques, led by Assoc. Prof. Toru Seo and Asst. Prof. Garavig Tanaksaranond
  • Working Group 2: Evaluation of Travel Demand Management Measures Using an Activity-based Microsimulation, led by Prof. Daisuke Fukuda and Assoc. Prof. Veera Muangsin
  • Working Group 3: Macroscopic Analysis of the Dynamic Traffic State on a City Scale, led by Assoc. Prof. Kentaro Wada and Assoc. Prof. Chaodit Aswakul
  • Working Group 4: Proposal and Application of an Intersection-level Microscopic Traffic Signal Control, led by Prof. Takashi Oguchi and Assoc. Prof. Sorawit Narupiti

Afterwards, a panel discussion was conducted with 4 panellists (Prof. Yoshitsugu Hayashi, Prof. Takashi Oguchi, Prof. Kasem Choocharukul, and Assoc. Prof. Sorawit Narupiti) and moderated by Mr. Yoshihisa Asada. The discussion, namely “Towards the Realization of The 3DTraffic in Bangkok”, was focusing on 3 topics: utilization of previous studies and projects’ legacy, project dissemination to private companies, and human resource development under the 3DTraffic project. The discussion was insightful and lively with interactive engagement from the audience.

The event was concluded with closing remarks from Assoc. Prof. Sorawit Narupiti, who expressed his hope to see improvement on Bangkok’s urban mobility scene through this project, which could be made possible through collaboration from all stakeholders.
